A new MacBook costs many thousands of kroner. A repair costs a fraction of that. But that is not always the right comparison, and we would rather give you the honest version than take a job that is not worth it.
The rule of thumb
Do not compare the repair with the price of a new MacBook. Compare it with what a used MacBook of the same model costs, because that is what you really get back after the repair. If the repair costs more than half of that, think it over. If it costs a quarter or less, it is almost always the right call.
The chip matters more than the age
MacBooks with an Apple chip (M1 and later, from 2020 onwards) are still fast enough for most things, and they will get new macOS versions for years to come. On these, a repair is almost always worth it, including a screen.
MacBooks with an Intel chip (2019 and older) are a different matter. Apple has announced that macOS Tahoe from 2025 is the last major macOS version for Intel Macs, and many of the older models have already stopped getting new versions. Security updates still come for a while after that, but the clock is ticking. Here a battery or a port still makes sense, because they are cheap relative to what you get. An expensive screen less often does.
What has broken
- Battery. The cheapest of the big repairs, and the one that makes the most difference. A MacBook with a new battery feels like a new machine day to day. Almost always worth it.
- Charging port. Same story: a low price relative to the machine’s value.
- Software, slow machine. Often solved with a macOS reinstall at a fixed price, with no part needed.
- Keyboard. More expensive, because on most models the keyboard is fixed into the whole top case. Worth it on a newer machine, a calculation on an older one.
- Screen. The most expensive single part. A clear yes on a newer MacBook Pro or Air with an Apple chip, often no on an old Intel model.
- Logic board. We do not repair it, and on older machines it is rarely worth it anywhere.
What is not on the price tag
A repair means you get your own machine back, with your apps, files and settings exactly as they were. A new machine also means an afternoon or two moving data and setting everything up again. That counts too.
And if you are going to sell it anyway: a MacBook with a new battery and an intact screen sells for noticeably more on DBA than one with faults.
