The price of an iPhone screen varies more than any other repair. The same model can cost very different amounts at two places in the city, and it is rarely clear why. Here is the explanation.
Why the price varies so much
Three things decide the price, and they all have to do with the screen itself.
The screen type. Older models and the cheapest current ones use LCD. From iPhone X onwards the Pro models use OLED, which costs considerably more to produce. It is the single biggest factor.
What is attached to the screen. An iPhone screen is not just glass. The Face ID sensors, the earpiece speaker and, on newer models, the ProMotion electronics are mounted on the screen module, and those parts have to come along or be moved across.
The quality of the part. This is where repair shops differ the most. A copy screen can cost less than half of an original, and it looks fine for the first few months. The difference shows in the colours, the brightness in sunlight, the touch sensitivity and how long it lasts.
What to ask, wherever you go
- What kind of screen is it? Original, service grade or copy. All three are legal to use, but they do not cost or last the same.
- How long is the warranty, and on what? A warranty on the part alone is not the same as a warranty on part and labour.
- Is VAT included in the price? Some shops quote prices without it.
- Does True Tone work afterwards? It requires the screen’s data to be transferred correctly. If the shop does not do that, you lose the feature.

Is it worth it, or should you buy a new one?
The honest version: on a phone that is four years old or younger and otherwise runs fine, a screen is almost always cheaper than a new phone. On an older model where the battery is also worn, add both repairs together before you compare.
If the screen is smashed and the battery is dead and the phone is six years old, we are happy to say it out loud: the money is better spent on a used phone.
Can you wait to get it replaced?
A few cracks in the corner are cosmetic. But if the glass is broken through, the phone is no longer sealed, and dust and moisture get in. And if there are cracks across the area where you type, you will cut your fingers on them over time. Either way, it does not get cheaper by waiting.
